A total of 198 people were fined for smoking inside Macau casinos in the first six months of 2014 in non-smoking areas, the city's health department said in a statement.

Working with Macau's gaming regulator, we conducted a total of 227 inspections of Macau casinos during the first half of the year.

Of those fined, 78.8% were visitors and the rest were Macau residents, the commissioner said.

The majority of offenders, 94.9%, were male.

The current rule, which has been in effect since January 2013, allows casino operators to install smoking areas in their casinos up to 50 percent of the gaming floor area. However, the new rule, which was announced earlier this year, states that all public market casino floors in Macau must stop smoking from October 6.

While operators are allowed to build enclosed smoking lounges on public market floors (without game tables or slot machines inside), smoking outdoors inside casino buildings is only allowed in private places. The city's Game Inspection and Coordination Bureau said in a directive issued earlier this month that these places should have "limited access to certain games and gamblers." It is understood to be for VIPs and certain premium public gaming areas.
